How well does Macadamia oil work against hair loss?

The other day I was in the drugstore and I saw a new hair oil that was promoted as "miracle remedy against hair loss."

My wallet felt it already coming... another product making promises that probably can't keep.

But this time it was macadamia oil, and that made me curious. Because while I think directly of those delicious nuts in chocolate bars, macadamia oil is perhaps one of the least discussed hair oils on the market.

Time to separate the facts from the fables. Because let's be honest. Who doesn't just want to know what really works?

This video explains the advantages of Macadamia oil for her well!

What is macadamia oil anyway? More than just a nice note

Before we go into what macadamia oil can mean to your hair, it's useful to know exactly what we're talking about. Macadamia oil is extracted from the nuts of the macadamia tree, which originally comes from Australia but is also grown in Hawaii and other parts of the world nowadays.

The oil contains a unique combination of nutrients that are particularly interesting to your hair:

  • High content of omega-7 fatty acids (pamitoleic acid)
  • Omega-9 fatty acids (oleic acid)
  • Vitamin E in abundance
  • Antioxidants fighting free radicals

What makes macadamia oil special is that the molecular structure resembles that of the natural oils that our scalp produces. This makes it easier to absorb through your hair and scalp, without that annoying greasy layer that leaves some oils behind.

Is macadamia oil really good for hair loss?

Let's drop the door straight into the house: Macadamia oil is not a miracle cure for hair loss. If you think you can stop serious hair loss with this oil alone, I'll have to disappoint you.

But that doesn't mean macadamia oil doesn't do anything. It can indirectly contribute to healthier hair that breaks down less quickly and consequently less. This does it in different ways:

The scalp as a basis for healthy hair

A healthy scalp is as fertile soil: essential for good growth. Macadamia oil contains anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce irritations. An irritated scalp can lead to more hair loss due to:

  • Inflammation around hair follicles
  • Excessive production of tallow
  • Disorders such as dandruff or seborrhoeic eczema

By massaging your scalp regularly with a few drops of macadamia oil you create a healthy environment where your hair can grow better. The massage itself furthermore stimulates blood circulation, which promotes the supply of nutrients to your hair follicles.

Protects against breakage (which is not the same as hair loss)

Many people confuse hair fracture with hair loss, but it's two different things:

  • Haaruitval: The hair falls out at the root
  • Hairbreak: The hair breaks down somewhere along the hair shaft

Macadamia oil essentially helps against the latter. The rich fatty acids in the oil penetrate deep into the hair shaft and supplement the hair structure from the inside. This makes your hair more elastic and stronger, making it less likely to break.

When you break her down less, it looks like you're losing less hair - and that's where macadamia oil really proves its worth. Especially for people with dry, damaged or colored hair this can make a big difference.

Macadamia oil specifically for thin hair: friend or foe?

If you have thin hair, you're probably careful with oils. Quite right, because many hair oils can weigh up thin hair and flatten it. But macadamia oil is different, and here's why:

  1. It is one of the lightest vegetable oils which exist, similar to jojoba oil.
  2. It will be recorded soon Without leaving a heavy movie.
  3. It adds volume by strengthening and filling the hair shaft.

The key is in the application. If you have thin hair, just use a few drops and concentrate on the lengths and ends. Avoid scalp if you quickly get fat hair.

A small hack that I use: mix a drop of macadamia oil with your regular conditioner. You get all the benefits without the risk of her being weighted.

Argan oil vs Macadamia oil: The fight of natural hair oils

"Is macadamia oil better than argan oil?" I get this question regularly. The honest answer: it depends on your hair type.

When do you choose argan oil?

  • If your hair is very curly or roaring
  • If you especially need protection from heat
  • If you're looking for UV protection

When do you choose macadamia oil?

  • If you have nice to normal hair
  • If you have a sensitive or irritated scalp
  • If you want to add shine without heaviness

Where argan oil is richer and heavier, macadamia oil is lighter and often better suited to finer hair. Argan oil has a higher concentration of vitamin E, but macadamia oil contains unique omega-7 fatty acids that are rarer in hair oils.

My personal experience is that macadamia oil works better in summer, while argan oil provides perfect protection in winter. Feel free to switch according to the needs of your hair.

The best way to use macadamia oil (and what you absolutely must avoid)

Now that we know what macadamia oil can (and cannot), let's look at the most effective ways to use it:

1. Pre-wash treatment

One of my favorite ways to use macadamia oil is as treatment before washing:

  1. Divide 5-10 drops of oil through your dry hair, focusing on the lengths and ends
  2. Massage gently and allow at least 30 minutes (one night is ideal)
  3. Wash your hair as usual

This protects your hair from the drying effect of shampoo and makes it easier to untangle.

2. As leave-in conditioner

For daily use:

  1. Take 1-2 drops between your palms
  2. Rub your hands together until the oil gets warm
  3. Apply to damp or dry hair, avoid scalp

This method is perfect for people with fine hair who just need some extra care without adding heaviness.

3. As an intensive hair mask (my secret recipe)

For a powerful boost:

  • 2 tablespoons macadamia oil
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 1 egg yolks

Mix all the ingredients and apply the mixture to damp hair. Cover with a warm towel and let in 45 minutes. Wash it thoroughly. This mask nourishes deeply and shines like no other.

What you should NOT do:

  • Use too much: More is not better with hair oils. Start with less than you think you need.
  • Apply directly to the scalp If you have fat hair soon
  • Expect the hair loss due to hormonal causes to stop

What is the best oil against hair loss?

If we look purely at scientific evidence, there are a few oils that perform better against hair loss than macadamia oil:

  1. Rosemary oil: Studies show that it is almost as effective as minoxidil (2%) in stimulating hair growth, probably due to improved blood circulation.
  2. Castor oil: Contains ricinolic acid that acts as an anti-inflammatory and may affect the prostaglandin E2, which is associated with hair growth.
  3. Pepermuntolie: Studies in mice showed a significant improvement in hair growth, thickness increase and hair follicle depth.

But let's face it: The effectiveness of these oils remains unproven treatments such as minoxidil, finasteride and dermarolling.

If you want to use oils against hair loss, consider using macadamia oil as a base and add a few drops of essential oil for a synergistic effect.

My personal experiences with macadamia oil

I've been using macadamia oil for about a year, and here are my honest observations:

  • My hair breaks down significantly less
  • The shine is noticeably improved
  • My scalp is less irritated than before
  • The hair is more manageable and fluff less

Did it stop my hair loss? No, not that. But it did make my hair healthier, making it look fuller.

Whatever I've noticed: The quality of the oil makes a huge difference. Cold pressed, organic macadamia oil without additives gives by far the best results.

The best macadamia oil brands in the Netherlands (who actually work)

After many experiments I found a few favourites available in the Netherlands:

  1. Australian Gold Macadamia Oil: Pure and effective, but on the pricey side
  2. Natural Heroes Macadamia Oil: Good value for money
  3. Fushi Organic Macadamia Oil: Organic and cold pressed

You can find these products at health shops such as Holland & Barrett, or online via bol.com and other webshops.

Please note:

  • 100% pure (no mixtures)
  • Cold pressed (preservation of nutrients)
  • Unrefined (darker in colour, more nutrients)
  • Packed in dark glass (protected from oxidation)

Finally: Is macadamia oil worth it?

If you're looking for a magical solution to severe hair loss, look beyond macadamia oil. The "Great Three" (finasteride, minoxidil and dermarolling) are proven to be more effective for androgenic alopecia.

But if you:

  • Want to strengthen your hair and lower her fracture
  • An irritated scalp wants to soothe
  • More shine and softness seeks
  • A natural addition to your current hair routine wants

Then macadamia oil is absolutely worth considering. It is one of the most versatile and user-friendly natural hair oils, suitable for almost any hair type.

My advice is simple: do not expect miracles, but give it a chance as part of a complete hair health strategy. Combine it with a healthy diet, good hair care habits and, if necessary, medical interventions.

Because in the end it's not just a miracle cure, but a holistic approach that gives her the best chance to shine.
